Banking’s Next Frontier – Serving The Underbanked Profitably Is A Real Business Proposition Today

Even as the global movement to eradicate poverty takes hold – through populist movements like that of Bono's as well as serious gestures by donor countries on debt reduction – there is emerging a new proposition that enables banks to be part of this global initiative, and in a profitable manner as well. Businesses like Grameen Bank in Bangladesh have pointed out that micro-financing is a commercially viable model. Today, global banks like Citigroup and HSBC are "upscaling" and "downscaling" to create linkages with micro-finance initiatives around the world. Surely after the promise of retail banking, the technology and business skills available are all set to make this new frontier possible for the financial-services industry. This session probes pressing issues in an area of banking that is real to many developing countries.

Mr. Jacques Attali, President of PlaNet Finance and Founder & first President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development

Mr. David Piesse, Head of Alternate Channels Group, SUN Microsystems

Moderator
Mr. Gordian Gaeta
